Case Studies / First ScotRail, Haymarket Depot
You've heard of the film Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Well, Specific Heat recently put its wealth of experience in devising heating solutions for aircraft hangers and large factories to good use in an engine shed, or more precisely two of them.
As part of a £6.7m upgrade of train servicing facilities at First ScotRail's award-winning Haymarket Depot in Edinburgh, Specific Heat installed a highly effective radiant tube heating system.
Perfect for buildings which are either high or subject to significant air movement (the Haymarket engine sheds are both), radiant heating works by heating people and objects, rather than the air inside a building. So there's a feeling of warmth, even though the measured temperature may be low.
Whatever the theory, it seems to be working in practice, as First ScotRail's engineers continue to improve the performance of the trains using its routes.
The Challenges
- Large area with high air movement
- Health & Safety requiring induction training/thorough risk assessments
- Restricted access
- Tight timescales
Our Solution
- Ambirad radiant heating system
- Supply & Extract systems going into the sheds to make them as comfortable as possible
Providing
- Heating system in engine sheds
- New low pressure hot water heating to the offices
