Case Studies / Centre for Ecology and Hydrology

please,...

Conserving the earth's natural resources is clearly a subject close to Specific Heat's heart, so we were delighted when we were approached by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) to help them implement a rainwater harvesting and recycling project at the Bush Estate.

Capitalising on the CEH's sizeable roof space, we installed an underwater drainage system, complete with 17,000 litre underground water tank. Next, we installed a submersible pump which, together with a processing system housed in a newly formed plant house, would enable the rainwater to be recycled and re-used in greenhouses, for washing cars and in the toilets – not the full range of uses admittedly, but by far the most demanding by volume.

It's still early days in assessing the cost savings, but Specific Heat thought this was such a good idea, with so many possibilities, that we have installed a similar harvesting system at our own premises in Loanhead (God knows, we get enough rain). We also now offer a water usage monitoring service so we can look after our customers' best interests from both a financial and ecological standpoint.
